Steps to reproduce:

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi merfius,
By "search bar", do you mean the URL bar, or do you mean the dedicated search input? that can exist alongside the URL bar?

The dedicated search bar.
I believe this is new behavior. Alt+Enter used to open in a new tab, which would be consistent with URLbar behavior.

Is this issue being seen when the new tab page (or about:blank) is displayed, or instead when the current tab is displaying an already-loaded page?

The latter.
Oops, browser.search.openintab was set to true. Thanks all!
