Add a keyboard shortcut for Translation

Details

Firefox Translation should have a keyboard shortcut to quickly access the feature. It would be useful in the situations:

  1. Foreign language not automatically translated and Translation must be invoked manually from the page action / address bar icon.
  2. Webpage has mixed language content and text must be selected and translated using the context menu.

When no text is selected, the keyboard shortcut translates the page immediately. The Translation page action indicates the page is translated if successful. If translation is not available or source language is not able to be determined, the Translation page action menu appears and is focused.

When text is selected, the keyboard shortcut translates the selected text immediately and displays the in-page UI as if invoked by the context menu.

Proposal:
macOS: command + shift + L
Linux & Windows: Ctrl + shift + L

Safari 18 and Chrome 131 do not appear to have a keyboard shortcut for their respective language translation features.

Marking this enhancement request as "NEW" to allow the engineering team to consider whether they will implement the suggested change or not.

Ctrl + shift + L

This is the default shortcut for autofill in Bitwarden. Maybe something else?

In my experience when choosing shortcuts, there will always be conflicts with addons unfortunately. We have discussed this on the translations team, but haven't made a decision on it.

Maybe all Firefox shortcuts should be configurable via Firefox preferences. Or at least some "non-core" shortcuts, such as this.

I agree that the ability to configure Firefox's shortcuts could be a useful feature for OSes that do not already provide the ability to override an app's default shortcuts like macOS. Other users have requested such a feature.

However, I must note that language translation is a core feature for non-English speakers and geographically displaced people. Addons are by definition non-core features and should adapt to Firefox's defaults.
