We're planning to introduce a new API with several new features (see 1919135 for details). As a first step, let's agree on the general shape of the new API.

I'm testing out a docs-first approach to this, based on the excellent
work that Bastian has done with topic guides. Here's how I'm thinking
the new API should generally work, what do others think?

Looks sync-group is not supported by our sphinx system. I removed them and am going to test this on try.
