One can need a different emulator than the version currently shipped by mach bootstrap. In bug 1924484 we cover how to create a new AVD to make it easier for those who may need it. However, the current wiring of mach android-emulator relies on https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/d56687458d4e6e8882c4b740e78413a0f0a69d59/testing/mozbase/mozrunner/mozrunner/devices/android_device.py#101-175 and so running a custom AVD requires changing that file, which we may want to improve.
Having a way to run mach android-emulator --name with the name of the AVD I want to use would help.

Have you tried using emulators built-in to Android Studio?

Avoiding the use of Android Studio because in my case it's really painful to use (and I never had to use visual studio or xcode anyway) and thus relying only on mach tooling
