In bug 1754452, we tried to expose a viewType to the DevTools frontend. But it was unreliable and I had to stop relying on such data.
See the following two discussions:

It is unfortunate, as it could be handy to differentiate the various types of documents and be able to display a particular icon or prefix in DevTools to help identify each type of document.

In bug 1933194, I'm improving the display of each document by displaying their title (but developers rarely set them), or pathname.
But it would be really handy to have some label or icon to differentiate each document type:
- background page
- popup
- devtools panel
- other?
Do you think someone would have cycle to provide this information reliably to DevTools?

December's nightly cycle is technically slighlty longer but there are festivities in the middle of it, and so the January's Nightly cycle may be more likely one where we could be try to reserve some cycles on both DevTools and WebExtensions sides, and agree on the design of the changes we will need to support that kind of use case.
