(Whiteboard: [qa-triaged])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Android 12; Mobile; rv:134.0) Gecko/134.0 Firefox/134.0

Steps to reproduce:

Less than a week ago, in Firefox for Android, all of my bookmarks and their folders, of which I already have several hundred, were suddenly scattered by themselves.

Unfortunately, after syncing with Windows, I had them all scattered there too, and when I painstakingly rearranged at least some manually and then synced again with Android, I had all the bookmarks destroyed again ☹️

Actual results:

I have all the bookmarks under Android and Windows mixed up and therefore damaged ☹️

Expected results:

I need the bookmarks to remain sorted even under Android the way I manually sorted them under Windows and not to be randomly scattered in folders in such a way that I can no longer navigate in them at all.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Sync' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Thank you for the report!

I am not sure I completely understand the issue.

The old design listed the Desktop Bookmark folders above, then the bookmark folders created by you, then the bookmarked pages that are not saved in any folders.
With the new design bookmarked folders are added in the order they are created - mixed in with the bookmarks. That means, after sync, the most recently accessed bookmarks are at the top of the list, and the last accessed ones are at the bottom at the list. Also, unaccessed folders are moved at the bottom of the list.

Please let us know the following:

  • do you have the new Bookmarks feature or the old one enabled? (In order to verify this, please go to Settings - About Firefox - tap 5 times the logo - exit back to Settings, scroll all the way down to Secret Settings and verify if "Enable Compose Bookmarks" toggle is ON)
  • what device did you use, and on which build (Nightly, Beta?) did you encountered this?
  • what does "randomly scattered in folders in such a way that I can no longer navigate in them at all" mean? are bookmarks from one folder moved to another?

Finally, an explanation for why the order of my bookmarks on Android suddenly stopped matching the order on Firefox Desktop. I've been trying to fix this for weeks. If this was a deliberate design change, I can only strenuously suggest that it was a bad idea. I do not want my bookmarks automatically sorted by the date they were created. I want them in the order that I have specified. This would be fine as an option, but arbitrarily making it the default behavior with, so far as I can see, no public warning or communication of the change is kinda terrible. At the very least, there should be a clearly labelled toggle to revert to the old behavior, not something buried in secret settings that most users don't even know exist.
