We added special treatment for Windows XP/Vista clients in Bug 1290737. This is no longer useful so it'd be good to delete this part to simplify the codebase.

Kinda related, we removed a similar workaround for macOS 10.9 to 10.11 a year ago: https://github.com/mozilla-services/go-bouncer/issues/367

:rjl the removal of the old xp/vista workaround is also going to "impact" Thunderbird since that was set up for Thunderbird after it was initially added for Firefox. Is this OK from your perspective?

It should be fine for Thunderbird as well. CC corey@thunderbird.net (TB Release Mgr)

During 2023 we created 15k DAU on XP and Vista (https://sql.telemetry.mozilla.org/queries/104106/source) in a context where mozilla.org cannot serve these downloads anymore. I agree let's remove the XP and Vista logic if it simplifies maintenance since we're in a situation where the value of having this is negligible:

  • Acquisitions on these platform are negligible
  • Mozilla.org does not serve these downloads anymore so these likely originate from external download sources that likely run their own CDNs or enterprise deployments that would also host the executables themselves
