Steps to reproduce:

Mozilla VPN was turned on. Attached my iPhone 16 Pro to my Toyota 2019 RAV4 Hybrid via USB-A to USB-C cable as normal.

Actual results:

Charging started BUT in less than a minute the charging stopped. Audible sound signified disconnected status. CarPlay never started. Charging started again. Then disconnected again. Sound again. Cycled over and over until I disconnected the cable.

Expected results:

Expected normal operation of charging and Apple CarPlay to negotiate and work.

Turning off the Mozilla VPN and then connecting the cable enabled proper operation.

FYI, running iOS 18.2. Software on RAV4 is up to date.

Thanks for filing. I've copied this over into a new GitHub issue in the VPN's repo here.

I can reproduce the issue.

About when iOS 18 came out, CarPlay started to fail intermittently on my Toyota Corolla. I'm not positive it was 18.0.0. It may have been shortly thereafter when the Mozilla client was updated to work around iOS/MacOS changes that broke many VPN packages. In any case, CarPlay + Mozilla VPN had been working properly for over a year before then.

The failure was that sometimes CarPlay would start and sometimes it would not. It took me a very long time to figure out that when Mozilla VPN is running, CarPlay fails. Specifically, the Toyota software does not recognize my phone has been connected via USB. When VPN is not running, CarPlay works fine. I confirmed this yesterday with the latest Mozilla VPN (2.24.3) and iOS (18.2.1) software.

FYI, there is not a problem with CarPlay & Mullvad's VPN client.
