It's random and can happen at first launch. And private windows can fail to launch while having a normal window opened.

What part of about:support do I have to copy? It's a massive text.

From https://github.com/Floorp-Projects/Floorp/issues/1452 it's not a new thing. Have you ever experience it or could you identify a range of versions it started ? The error shared suggest it's on the flatpak side. I think martin may have more ideas.

Please try to run flatpak on terminal with

--env MOZ_DISABLE_WAYLAND_PROXY=1

argument and check output. That disables wayland proxy. Also please try to run with proxy enabled and logging, i.e.:

--env WAYLAND_PROXY_LOG=1

and attach output here. You may run it on terminal as:

flatpak run org.mozilla.Firefox --env WAYLAND_PROXY_LOG=1

where org.mozilla.Firefox is name of Firefox/flatpak. You can get list of all flatpak apps by

flatpak list

terminal command if org.mozilla.Firefox is not a correct name.

Couldn't manage to get it to fail to launch with that command, but I could get it to say the same error, the quantity of lines regarding that error varies, which makes me think this command keeps trying to launch Firefox until it succeeds.

I find this crash only happens when firefox is launched through krunner, has anyone been able to reproduce the crash when running it from the terminal?

I'm not sure how related this is but I am experiencing something quite similar.
Launching with "flatpak run org.mozilla.firefox" in terminal works fine, however, if I try to launch from desktop/KDE Start menu entry it created upon installation, it sometimes does nothing and I need to try it a few more times (like 2-6x).
Another problem that could be related to this, is that opening links from other flatpak apps in flatpak Firefox also sometimes fails (regardless of whether Firefox was already open or not) and I need to try it a few more times. Links from non-flatpak apps -> flatpak Firefox open without a problem.

Not sure about flatpak but for system-wide installed Firefox you can add logging to system launch script directly (on Fedora it's /usr/bin/firefox).

With MOZ_DISABLE_WAYLAND_PROXY=1, I no longer have any problems launching Firefox.

That was on flatpak Firefox and from my limited testing, I don't think I had any of this happen on non-flatpak Firefox.

About the startup time... It's like half a second and I can't really see any difference between having that env variable on or off - when it launches, that is.

I also think that would probably work.

(Coming here because I reproduce this with the fedora package ( firefox-146.0-3.fc43.x86_64 ) being run in firejail (didn't try without firejail); sometimes it works, sometimes it prints the try again message a couple of times)
To me it looks like a simple synchronization issue (the client tries to connect to the proxy before the proxy is ready) and waiting a bit longer ought to do the trick.
I'd go as far as saying the try again message debug level should be lowered, or rate limited, unless proper synchronization is in place.

I'm experiencing this issue on Bazzite 43.

I have to disable Wayland on Flatseal for Firefox to open.

Is there anyway I can help to fix this?

I am using the Zen flatpak now (based on Firefox), but I said I still have the same issue.

I wonder why we see it. We'd need to use strace but I' not sure how it integrates with flatpak.

FWIW I ran with strace a while back and you won't get much more info (at least with a basic strace) -- firefox repeatedly calls connect() on the proxy socket and gets EAGAIN until it gives up.
This happens even when firefox successfully launches, there's just no synchronization so if it's a bit slower it'll timeout.
I assume the proper solution would be to add some synchronization between starting the proxy and trying to connect to it, but a stopgap increasing the timeout would probably be enough for most use cases...

(I was just getting annoyed and cloned the firefox repo to look into it, but I upgraded to fedora 44 beta and it's not been happening since so I won't be of any more help here :/)

I think we just can threat 'try again' as non-fatal error and just try again and don't fail. Or use a bigger timeout or so.

Checked how Gtk3 works and it calls just wl_display_connect() which calls connect() to wayland socket only once and returns nullptr on any failure.

Let's create the compositor socket blocking - there's no point to start the proxy without wayland compositor anyway.
