Details

In my recent Mozilla builds, there has been a painting problem with the bottom pane of the 3-pane interface. When I click on a newsgroup to view the messages in the newsgroup and the interface switches from 2 to 3 panes (in both configurations), the right-bottom pane in the first 3-pane interface and the bottom pane in the second 3-pane interface are not repainted; they retain the contents of the window that was already there. In the second option, this causes a leftover (unusable) grippy to be there, plus the content.
So, yes, this applies to mail, too. Seems to be generic to that particular UI transition (from the folder listing and "helper page" to the 3-pane).
