Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/134.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
Opened Firefox Translations from the toolbar button after Firefox reported being updated (v.136.0 64-bit) today, 11-Mar-2025 and nothing at all displays in the from and to languages drop down lists. I have also restarted Firefox and tried again.
This is in Firefox on macOS 12.7.6 on Intel.
Firefox Translations version "1.3.4buildid20230720.091143" shows when managing the extension. Last Updated 27 July 2024.
Allow Automatic Updates is set to default.
Actual results:
No languages display in the language selection drop down lists.
Expected results:
Languages should have displayed from which to choose the source and target languages.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Translations' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi alt.s4-dox19if2, thanks for filing this!
I'm not fully understanding your bug report.
I have a few follow-up questions and clarifications that will hopefully allow us to get this resolved.
The User Agent that you pasted is for the Google Chrome browser, version 134.
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/134.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
A Firefox User Agent would look like this:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:136.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/136.0
You also mentioned, "managing the extension," which makes me believe that you may be attempting to use the old Firefox Translations extension, which is no longer necessary for translating within Firefox. The extension page has a note in the description:
NOTE: The features previously offered by this extension are now integrated into Firefox, eliminating the need for any additional installations.
Could you follow the steps on our support page to try translating directly with the browser's integrated Translations feature?
If that's still not working, it would be helpful to see a screenshot of what you are seeing.
I just updated my MacBook to Firefox 136 today and was not able to reproduce the issue you've described.
Thank you!

I was trying to solve the problem again today, and yes, I had been using the Firefox Translations extension, which only stopped working recently. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, restarted the browser and tried all sorts of things.
I don't use Firefox for everything, and I was reporting the bug via Brave browser, hence the different User Agent string.
The problem is that the languages suddenly disappeared when trying to translate via the button in the menu.
As it turns out, with the built-in translations in Firefox there appears to be no way to add a button for translating, for example, while having a conversation between two different languages, but it only offers to translated a web page.
To get some semblance of the original functionality I had to create a local HTML page with a one or two text boxes in order to be able to select and translate some text. Translations would still not be offered automatically as a simple HTML page (possibly only specifying <html lang="en"> it would not preempt whatever random language you might paste into the text box to be translated. The previous Firefox Translations extension had a convenient pair of text boxes in its interface with from and to languages. This was the whole point of using Firefox for translating between languages, without sending text to Google or other websites.
I had discovered that the extension, which is still able to be installed today, says on their page that Firefox now natively does their functionality, but also I have found today that the button and from and to language choices don't appear anywhere in the native Firefox translations system.
