Good catch! This looks like a regression in 139. I can reproduce this bug in Nightly 139, but not in Beta 138 or Release 137.

Hmm. I think this is related to our picture-in-picture fix which was adding in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1956165#c23

If I visit about:compat, disable the YouTube PiP intervention, and reload the tab, then try again, it seems to work.

Indeed this is caused by our intervention. I have a candidate patch to fix this in bug 1962007.

Depends on: 1962007

The bug is marked as tracked for firefox139 (nightly). We have limited time to fix this, the soft freeze is in a day. However, the bug still isn't assigned.

:titouan, could you please find an assignee for this tracked bug? Given that it is a regression and we know the cause, we could also simply backout the regressor. If you disagree with the tracking decision, please talk with the release managers.

(I'm landing the fix for this right now in bug 1962007, so I'll asssign myself here too).

Thomas: strangely, when I picked up my Android phone this morning (a Moto G5 running Android 8.1), my lockscreen's wallpaper had been set to the thumbnail image of the YouTube video that got stuck in full screen mode yesterday. Could the fix for PiP bug 1956165 have caused that?

Never mind. I can reproduce this lock screen behavior (bug?) in Fx 137 and Beta 138, which don't have this YouTube full screen bug! I'll test whether that is a bug or not.

I filed bug 1962288 for the unrelated lock screen wallpaper bug.

Let's solve it!

Verified as fixed on the latest Firefox for Android Nightly 139.0a1 from 4/25 (build 2016087218).
Tested with:

  • OnePlus 5 (Android 10),
  • Google Pixel 6 (Android 16),
  • Samsung Galaxy A14 (Android 14), and
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra (Android 14), and

The PiP works as expected, the next video continues without pausing, pusing/resuming work.
Entering and exiting fullscreen works.
