Steps to reproduce:

I upgraded to Firefox 138.0, and (often) when I clicked on the 'x' (close) button of any horizontal tab...

Actual results:

Nothing happened, other than a popup appearing under the tab showing the full title of that page

Expected results:

The tab should close. However, I can still close the tab by middle-clicking on it.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

In fact, when this bug happens, the entire Firefox toolbar (including URL textbox, back & forward buttons, etc) is disabled - nothing can be clicked, except for the top row menu (which I have enabled).

Another Linux person I know (I have Linux too )has the same problem with FF 138. So it's not just my machine.

Seconding this, whole top bar, extensions, url, tabs goes uninteractable consistently since 138.

The vertical tab version of the same menus do work as usual during this issue, breakage is specific to horizontal.

The story is slightly different for me: I have 3 Firefox windows open on the Arch Linux desktop, one of which has the X button inoperative while the other 2 window remains fine.

The problematic window has the following buttons non-functional: New Tab, Back, Refresh, Close Window, Address Bar, extension list & any pinned extension, overflow menu and main hamburger menu. The downloads button & tab switching functions though.

I have the same problem on Linux. It happens randomly. I can still open new tabs and switch them. When I click on ❌ to close a tab or ⭐ to create a bookmark, nothing happens.

Using 138.0.1 on OpenSuSE Tumbleweed - and can confirm that at random times the FF UI cannot be used using a mouse... Shortcuts work.

Closing and restoring the previous sessions solve the issue - until the next time...

No idea what additional information we should provide to help to figure out the source of this...

This also happened to me a few times. When this last happened a few minutes ago, most UI components did not response but a few of them still worked (e.g., download, homepage). Keyboard shortcut worked normally.

This happens to me on regular basis. Clickin x with left mouse button doesn't work. It seems like entire toolbar is not clickable as i can not close tabs, click on adress bar, click on extentions, menu etc. What is working is opening new tab, changing tab, right click context menu for tabs and keyboard shortcuts.

Same happens to me. I can't reproduce, but it happens almost every day after using Firefox for a while. 138.0.1 RPM on Fedora.

Same problem on Manjaro, KDE, Wayland, AMD cpu/gpu, HDR monitor. Started with FF 138.0 and still present with FF 138.0.1. Usually one window of FF can become unresponsive this way while others work still normally. As a workaround I close this unresponsive FF window (with several tabs) and then from another window just reopen it : History -> Recently closed windows -> select the window.... or just press CTRL-SHIFT-N to re-open the last closed window.

Same thing happens to me on multiple machines. Happening in both fully updated Fedora 41 KDE and Fedora 42 KDE. Firefox version 138.0.3. When this happens, the only way to close a tab is to right click -> "Close Tab" (or close the entire window). Seems to have started for me around when tab groups were added.

If you use Ctrl + t to open a new tab, that seems to clear the freeze condition. This seems be be a fairly pervasive bug. Hope it gets fixed soon.

I'm going to try to turn off tabs.groups and see if that helps. For those who want to try:

Disabling tab groups didn't help.

Strangely enough, the same (or very similar) problem sometimes happens to me in Google Chrome after attempting to save a file by clicking "save as" from context menu, except I can't interact with Chrome at all. Maybe this is not a Firefox issue?

I was also experiencing this bug with Fedora 42 Plasma Spin with Firefox 138.0.4

I downgraded Firefox to 136.0.3-1.fc42 and that appears to have fixed the issue for me.

No need to downgrade, the workaround is super simple, just drag a tab to get it out of the broken state.

Tab close button and URL bar click issues persist in Firefox 139 on KDE Plasma 6.3.5, Wayland (archlinux)

Is this a Wayland-only bug? I got Wayland too (Plasma 6.3.3).

Still happens in Firefox 139 on GNOME Wayland. Can confirm that dragging a tab fixes this temporarily.

Can confirm this issue in Firefox 139.0.1 installed as snap on Ubuntu 24.04.2 GNOME Wayland running on 2 monitors.

Functional state during bug:

  • Sidebar open/close buttons work
  • Drag/drop tabs to new windows works (new windows created this way function normally)

Recovery behavior (new observation):

  • Issue self-resolved after 15-20 minutes without restart
  • Recovery coincided with closing a couple tabs (unclear if causal)
  • No window closure or Firefox restart required

This automatic recovery suggests temporary state corruption rather than permanent breakage.

Workaround confirmed: Moving tabs to new window immediately fixes them.

This is a duplicate of bug 1955112 . It will be resolved in Firefox 141.

As a temporary workaround, just drag any tab just a little bit, and the UI will begin to function properly again.
