Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:138.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/138.0

Steps to reproduce:

Installed Firefox V138.0 on Linux Mint

Actual results:

Bookmarks sidebar has to be manually restarted every time I open Firefox.

Expected results:

Bookmarks side should automatically load if Firefox is closed with the bookmarks side visible.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Sidebar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Sidebar

For me, it was enough to delete the "xulstore.json" file. After that, everything worked as before.

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue similar to what is described in this bug (Bug 1964260) with the sidebar's "Bookmarks" setting not being saved after closing Firefox. I would like to share additional details that may help with the investigation.

Environment:

  • Firefox version: 138.0.1
  • Operating System: Windows 10 19045.5737

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Enable the "Bookmarks" sidebar by going to View > Sidebar > Bookmarks (ensure the checkbox is ticked).
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > History > "Clear history when Firefox closes" and enable it.
  3. In the "Clear history" settings, check the box for "Browsing & Download History."
  4. Fully close Firefox (not just restart, ensure the process is terminated).
  5. Restart Firefox and check the "Bookmarks" sidebar setting under View > Sidebar.

Expected Behavior:
The "Bookmarks" sidebar checkbox should remain enabled after restarting Firefox.

Actual Behavior:
The "Bookmarks" sidebar checkbox is unchecked after restarting Firefox, and the sidebar is not displayed.

Additional Observations:

  • This issue only occurs when the "Browsing & Download History" option is checked in the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings.
  • If I uncheck "Browsing & Download History" in the clear history settings, the "Bookmarks" sidebar setting is correctly saved, and the checkbox remains enabled after restarting Firefox.
  • The issue does not occur when restarting Firefox without fully closing it (e.g., using the "Restart" option).
  • I have not tested with a new profile or by resetting xulstore.json yet, but I can provide further details if needed.

Workaround:
Disabling the "Browsing & Download History" option in the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings prevents the issue from occurring.

I believe this issue is related to Bug 1964260, as it involves the same sidebar setting not being saved. The interaction with the "Clear history" setting may provide a clue about the root cause, possibly related to how Firefox handles places.sqlite or xulstore.json during history clearing.

Thank you for your efforts!

Best regards,
