Bug 1939561#c2 submitted "TikTok" to the American English dictionary some months ago.
The person in charge of the American English dictionary refused adding it because of a strict interpretation of the "no new company names policy," ignoring that:
- TikTok has already been around for 8 years and is one of the most talked about things in the English language
- Old names that few people talk about today, like "ChatZilla" and "Macromedia," are still in the dictionary
- Users get a bad impression of Firefox when the spellchecker doesn't recognize extremely common words such as "TikTok"
I propose giving dictionary maintainers more reasonable guidelines, such as "Only add submitted company and brand names if they have regularly been appearing in news articles for the last X months."
If there's a serious concern that people would start submitting too many names and that this list would grow so long that it would cause performance issues, change it to "Only add and keep," allowing for the removal of terms like "ChatZilla" to make room for more current words.
