The new vertical tabs sidebar (which can be opened in addition to the traditional sidebar) in recent Firefox versions is great.

I only wish it was easier to toggle it on/off on the fly. Currently, there is a keyboard shortcut for it, Ctrl+Alt+Z (at least on the Linux version), but this is not documented in the shortcuts documentation page, and is also problematic in various ways:

  • It requires two hands on the keyboard on some keyboard layouts (such as the Dvorak simplified keyboard layout, and its regional variants)

  • It is uncommon compared to other apps. Typically, the F9 key is used in most apps out there to toggle the main sidebar on/off, so that's what I'd expect here (especially since the other sidebar's panes have dedicated shortcuts like Ctrl+B, Ctrl+H, etc.).

As the F9 key is not mentioned anywhere in the shortcuts documentation page, and Firefox does not seem to do anything when I press it, I suspect it would be free to be assigned as the primary (or secondary) shortcut for the "toggle/collapse the vertical tabs sidebar" action. For those whose keyboards have F keys, it would be much more convenient to press this single key like in other apps on Linux.
