User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:139.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/139.0

Steps to reproduce:

My e-mail providers have pretty good spam filters. Thus most spam messages land in the spam folders. But to find false positives I must check the spam folders.
Currently an increasing number of spam messages are arriving. I set up rules that could mark obvious spam messages as read. That would take less time to check the spam folders.

Actual results:

At automatic message retrieval rules are only applied to inboxes, thus only to spam messages that were not recognized by the spam filter of the providers.

Expected results:

It should be possible to apply rules to spam folders with automatic retrieval.
Even better, if a rule could be applied to the inbox or spam folders of all accounts. Then it is not necessary to create rules for every account.

I set up rules that could mark obvious spam messages as read.

Not sure what you mean by 'I set up rules' but it implies you were in 'Message Filters'. Message Filters operate automatically on emails arriving in Inbox only.
But if you want to set up auto mark as read on emails marked as spam then there's already a setting where you can set up to mark junk as read:

  • Settings > Privacy & Security
  • Scroll to 'Junk' section
  • under 'Mark messages as read'
  • select the checkboxes to auto mark as read.

Bug 1602704 seems like a solution for that.

I mean filter rules.

Messages that were moved to the spam folder on the server already don't touch the inbox. Thus filters will not be applied to them.
I don't want to mark every message in the spam folder as read because a few times there are false positives. But I want to mark those that are obviously spam e.g. the dozens of messages that contain McAfee. Then I only need to check those messages for false positives that are still unread. The huge number of currently ariving spam messages makes this necessary.

Kind of. Why not allow to add folders additionally to the inbox that filters are applied to when messages are retreaved? In my case this will only be the spam folder of my accounts.
Why do this periodically? I don't see a scenario when messages should be filtered othen than when retrieving them from the server.

Then that would be bug 294632
