Steps to reproduce:
Have events in the calendar with reminders for events that are in the future, but the start time for the reminder has passed. For example, if today is 7/10/2025, have an event for 7/12/2025, with a reminder scheduled for two weeks in advance. Restart Thunderbird. No reminder popup is shown.
This occurs with version 140.0.1 on the release channel, and version 140.0esr. Version 139.0.2 has the correct behavior.
Actual results:
Reminders are displayed when the start time for the reminder occurs. Once the start time has elapsed, but the event has not yet occurred, the reminder isn't shown. This is a change from previous behavior. This was broken.
Expected results:
When Thunderbird is started, the calendar should be scanned for events that have not occurred, but the start time for a reminder has passed. Reminders for those events should be displayed.

I found "Show missed reminders for writable calendars" in the setup for Calendars. This doesn't quite do the right thing, displaying events that have already passed when Thunderbird is started. Only events that are still in the future should be shown. But it does help.

see bug 1976629 (and bug 1934069 really).
Since you found the pref, what do you think is wrong with it? The behavior of that did not change, just that it was on by default in v128.

Have to agree with Philipp Kewisch (Comment 3, bug 1934069).
The only possible issue with the pref "Show missed reminders for writable calendars" is that events that have already passed are shown in the reminder popup at startup. Once the old ones are dismissed, only the ones pending are shown at startup. I can live with that, so you're welcome to close this bug report. Please don't get rid of the pref in a future release.

It is a bug that when I upgraded to the version with the new default, that my selection in the preferences to have "Show missed reminders for writable calendars" on was ignored and it was turned off without a "by your leave" prompt.
