Steps to reproduce
Unfortunately I don't know of the exact STR here; this is just a bug I encounter every few days.
But roughly, my inferred STR are:
- Use Firefox Nightly for a while, with regular tabs and private browsing tabs and app-tabs (e.g. tapping links in email). Not sure precisely what's needed, but this describes my typical usage.
- Allow time to pass so that Firefox Nightly enters some dormant (or closed?) state.
- Launch Firefox Nightly and look at the Homepage (i.e. new-tab page)
Expected behavior
Should look normal.
Actual behavior
The new-tab tiles have purple backgrounds instead of gray backgrounds (see screenshot). It almost looks like private-browsing theming, but of course this isn't private browsing (as you can tell from the fact that there are tiles in the first place).
Device information
- Firefox version: 142.0a1 2025-07-18
- Android device model: Pixel 9 Pro XL
- Android OS version: 16
Any additional information?
- I've been hitting this occasionally for several weeks at least. I've been trying to screenshot it, as a note-to-self, each time I encounter it, and right now the oldest screenshot I'm finding was on July 4th (likely with Nightly from July 2nd or earlier, since Play Store nightly-updates are usually a few days behind). My most recent screenshot is from July 20th (with Nightly 2025-07-18 as noted above).
- As I recall, this issue isn't persistent. The next time I view the Homepage, it looks normal.

note, I have dark-theme enabled on my phone, and I also have Nightly manually set to Dark theme (not "follow device theme").
Not sure if either of those settings are necessary for triggering the bug; just mentioning them in case they end up being relevant.
