about:preferences#searchand add a custom search engine - Set Firefox to delete all data on exit except for
Site settings - Restart Firefox and edit your custom search engine
Result: its favicon is replaced by a generic icon.

One approach for this could be to not remove the favicon if the engine's origin remain unchanged.
