With bug 1959012, there was a regression in Firefox 140 that caused that pressing the back button closes the current tab when there is no history. It was fixed in bug 1813413 for Firefox 141. Now, with the Homepage as a New Tab project (bug 1902940), the behavior that was fixed in bug 1813413 is there again.
I understand that with the home page as a tab, it is more reasonable to argue that it should be possible to navigate “back” to the home page. But for me, this impairs my workflow compared to the old behavior. If I wanted to close a tab, I would do so explicitly via the tabs tray. With the back button, there is a very high risk that you simply wanted to navigate back and accidentally closed the tab. And having to open the history every time and restore tabs from there is really annoying.
Perhaps this is something that could be made configurable?
