User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:140.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/140.0

Steps to reproduce:

MacBook Air 2020
Apple M1 8 GB
MacOS Sequoia 15.5
Firefox V140.0.2 (aarch64)

  1. Open Firefox General Settings
  2. Uncheck "When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately"
  3. Open Other Bookmarks
  4. Right-click any bookmarked tab
  5. Select 'Open in New Tab' from Context Menu
  6. Tab will open & Firefox will automatically switch to the new tab

Actual results:

Tabs open & are automatically switched to.

I switched to Firefox to get away from Google, but the small inconveniences like this bug/unexpected behavior are the things that add up & make the Firefox experience difficult. Especially since my job has me using this feature so often, the irritation builds up quickly. I'm not a programmer or anything in the tech space, so I'm not sure if what I'm describing is the same as other reported bugs.

Expected results:

I just wanted the tab to open without switching to it.

When reading research papers, the journal's site might auto-reset your place to section headers when you leave the screen. Some sites stop loading content or restart if you switch tabs. Other websites track tab switching as a new instance and disrupt typing you might have in progress. It just interferes so often.

I'm not sure if it's an issue with the Firefox browser, or if it's an issue with the macOS context menu, or if that's the same thing. Also, not sure if bookmarks are not treated as links, so they don't fall under this setting. I know that there's an unsorted bookmarks folder on Firefox mobile, and when I imported my bookmarks from Chrome, they all went into that folder. Is it possible that this is because of the bookmark import or because it was intended that new bookmarks are supposed to be made in the Bookmarks Menu? The bookmarks open normally & don't automatically switch on Firefox Mobile

The agent thing at the top of the post seems wrong & I wanted to add this screenshot

The agent line at the top seems wrong, so I just wanted to add the actual specs for my device

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Bookmarks & History

There's a slightly different hidden setting for Bookmarks - you can visit about:config, search for browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground and then double click it to turn it to true.

I think this might be a duplicate of an existing bug, but I can't find it at the moment, so I'll leave it open for the time being.

As per my comment about, there is a separate hidden preference for what you want. Bug 469456 is about simplifying and unifying these preferences, so marking as a duplicate of that one.
