As a followup to the recent removal of the translations button from the toolbar on small devices
Users should be informed about and allowed to control translations for the current webpage through a new bottom banner.

In Nightly, there is no button to translate the page. Instead, there is a button to open a new tab. A translate button would be more convenient!

The display is perfect, site name, reading and translation modes.

In Nightly, there is no button to translate the page. Instead, there is a button to open a new tab. A translate button would be more convenient!

This is a known issue that we are planning to soon improve on.
Unfortunately on portrait phones we are space constrained - we need to prioritize showing the URL and there is little room for other buttons.
The translation button was recently removed following the report from bug 1970084 and others.

This issue with the translation button not being available on small screens is minimized in part through the following:

  • immediately after accessing a webpage a new bottom dialog should appear allowing users to control the translation
  • a "Translate page" button is available in the menu.

The pop-up is too big and hides the site

The space is there also in small screens. It would also suffice to allow the + button to be changed with an action at choice.
Sometimes I find myself first wanting to read the article in the original language and translate it later, the new menu is very uncomfortable: I need to press the 3 dots, more and then translate. With the old menu instead it was 3 dots - translate. With these 2 problems I decided to downgrade to the old version of firefox where there is the translate button and the menu is more immediate to use.

The latest nightly version includes the option to expand the navigation bar and have more buttons. However, the button to translate pages is not yet available. I am attaching a screenshot of my redesign, which includes the button to translate pages with the navigation bar compressed.

Thank you for the feedback!
More updates for the discoverability and interactions with the translations feature are planned.

Opera has done it, can you?

Following bug 1969124 a translation button can be chosen to always be visible in the navigation bar by going to Settings -> Customize -> Toolbar shortcut.
This will allow easily knowing whether the current page is translated or not + easily triggering or stopping the current page from being translated.
