[Affected versions]:
- Firefox Beta 143.0b6;
[Affected Platforms]:
- Windows 10 x64;
[Prerequisites]:
- Be enrolled in the “IP Concealment - Alpha variant” experiment.
- Be logged in with an account with a yearly subscription for Mozilla VPN.
[Steps to reproduce]:
- Open the browser using the profile from the prerequisites.
- Click on the Firefox VPN toolbar icon.
- Observe Firefox VPN panel button;
[Expected result]:
- The Download button is displayed in the Firefox VPN panel.
[Actual result]:
- The Upgrade button is displayed in the Firefox VPN panel.
[Notes]:
- This is also reproducible for bundle subscriptions.
- The issue is not reproducible while using an account with monthly subscription.
- Turn on is not working and the general error message is displayed.

This seems like it could be intermittent so I don't want to close it, but as we don't seem to be able to reproduce it I think we should move it to post-alpha.

Is being enrolled in the experiment a mandatory requirement, or is it sufficient to manually enable the feature via about:config? I also have an annual subscription and am getting the same error.

I think that the issue is somehow influenced by the fact that some of the accounts we repro this with, already have subscriptions added, and are not upgraded form the Firefox VPN happy flow.
Something is very odd with "Turn on is not working and the general error message is displayed." happening at the same time. It seems to point to a connectivity issue, which could explain why the Widget is neither able to connect nor able to see that a Yearly Sub is present?

This is correct - having a subscription does not give you access, your account needs to be enrolled into the experiment.

I think so too - I have a strong feeling this is related to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1986749
