message sending hang when you switch outgoing server from port 465 to 587 or vice versa

Details

  1. Configure a TB profile to use port 587 with STARTTLS or port 465 with TLS for SMTP.
  2. Send a message.
  3. Edit the outgoing server settings and change it from 587+STARTTLS to 465+TLS or vice versa.
  4. Try to send another message.
  5. Observe that it hangs for a while and then tells you the message send failed.
  6. Try to send the message again, and observe that you get a failure message immediately.
  7. Quit and restart Thunderbird and try to send the message, and observe that it now sends just fine.
