Details

User-Agent: Dillo/0.7.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.2.1-1 and Mozilla 1.3b

When starting mozilla, the first page loaded (start page: www.mozilla.org/start) loads just fine. Any links that are within the mozilla.org heirarchy load fine. The problem is whenever I try to access a site with a new IP address. The site will take between one and three minutes before the DNS resolves. If I ping the machine I want to connect to and then type the IP directly into Mozilla then that page will load. There are no errors displayed, just exteme slowness. I've tried Galeon2 (newest one) and Mozilla 1.2.1-1 and 1.3b. The problem does not appear with other browsers (I've used Opera, Konqueror and Dillo). The problem appears to be with the DNS in Mozilla, and browsers based on Mozilla. I'm using FreeBSD 5.0-p5 with Gnome 2.2 (and KDE 3.1) with XFree86 4.3. Mozilla is the only internet related problem I'm having, everything else works fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Mozilla
2.Wait for the first page to load
3.Try to load another page with a different IP address
Actual Results:
Step three hung for about two minues waiting to get the IP address (in this case, I was loading www.hotmail.com after www.mozilla.org/start had already successfuly loaded.

Expected Results:
Loaded www.hotmail.com a heck of a lot faster than it did.
Joel, does this same problem occur with a fresh install of Mozilla 1.3 or a
recent nightly build?
URL: any
OS: other → FreeBSD
I kept looking into it, and apparently it has to do with a combination of
FreeBSD and Mozilla. The problem lies with IPv6, and Mozilla does something
with it if it is available which is causing the problem. I recompiled the
kernel without IPv6 support and all is fine now. I'm going to look for the
specific information I found and post it here.
I got frustrated trying to find the information. There is a lot of information
about Mozilla and IPv6 out there. If I remember correctly searching for a
combination of these terms should turn up some interesting results: Mozilla
workaround ipv6 inet6 nslookup (maybe throwing in FreeBSD will narrow the
results). I think I found the workaround at www.freebsd.org/search, and then
searched the Mailing List Archives.
