Since upgrading to Slackware 9 running XFree86 4.3, the fonts in Mozilla still
work okay, but the link underlining has completely vanished -- but only on
certain websites. If I go to mozilla.org, the underlines work fine. Google? No
underlines. Slashdot? Underlines are there.
"Underline links" is enabled in preferences.
Speaking of preferences, that's another issue I'm having which seems to be
related. When I go into the preferences and select from the menu options on the
left, the selection-highlighting no longer appears.
This is only happening under XFree86 4.3. I have truetype fonts installed as
well. This may be either a problem with truetype rendering or my particular
video setup, as I had a friend of mine download the latest nightly on *his*
Slackware 9 box, and underlines worked fine.
I have an NVidia GeForce 2.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Mozilla on a system running X 4.3, preferably on a box with a GeForce 2
using NVidia's drivers.
2. Go to Google, and perform a search.
3. Observe the lack of link underlines.
Actual Results:
Page came up normally, sans link underlines.
Expected Results:
Underline links for all fonts.

Sounds like a combination of X bug and a particular font....
There's another bug reporting that XFree86 4.3 is reporting underline position
metrics as the negative of what it should be, and that there will be a switch
back to the way it used to work.

This appears to be a problem with TrueType fonts ONLY. After freshly installing
Slackware 9, Mozilla did not show this problem at all. Once I installed the
TrueType font set, the problem instantly re-appeared.

Same problem with RH-9, trying to use TrueType fonts from Windows. Someone
mentined another bug report with same/similar problem, is someone working on that?

I have the same problem in Mandrake 9.1. It is quite annoying. For now, I'm
forced to use an xft build so font underlining shows up properly. I'm not
thrilled with that because the xft rendering is much slower and seems to want to
lock up X on me on occasion.

I don't know if it's relevant, or even important, but this bug also appears on
the latest Phoenix/Firebird nightlies.
Dupe of bug 195573?

It appears to be a dupe, yes. If so, a fix is in XFree86's CVS. Now I need to
figure out how to patch Mandrake's version of XFree86 so fix this.
