Steps to reproduce:
Gmail app installed as default (thunderbird is installed also)
Settings > Open Links in Apps > Always (but i tried ask before...)
Open Firefox for Android and search for icon Tel o a link for mailto:
Test mailto: or tel:
Actual results:
Nothing now happens when a mailto: or tel: link is touched.
When I set Settings > Open Links in Apps > Ask before... a windows appears that say: OPEN IN INTENTRESOLVER
Expected results:
Gmail app or Telephone app opens.
Maybe is relateted on the device "Xiaomi redmi note 14 5g" because it happens to same device of my friend.
I tried with beta and nightly and the same problem occur.
The behavior with Brave or Chrome is correct.
I can reproduce this with FF 143 and Android 13 on a Fairphone 4.
Not sure if this is related, but Firefox seems to have problems opening other external apps as well. Not all though, some links work properly (YouTube, IMDb, ...) but others don't.
I have the Open links in apps setting to Ask before opening (not sure about the exact phrasing in English, my device is set to Dutch). Uninstalling and re-installing did not help.

Couldn't reproduce on Pixel 7 and Samsung S25. I believe this is device/OS specific. I'll investigate. Thanks

This is a good clue. When set to Ask before opening it did trigger a prompt. This shows that Firefox Android does know that there is an application that wants to open it. The INTENTRESOLVER is probably the intent resolver application in Xiaomi devices.
Hi Valter, thank you for reporting this. What happens if you see INTENTRESOLVER prompt and tap on "Open"? Thanks

Yes, my device is Xiaomi.

Nothing happens.
If it helps, I have Thunderbird installed on the same phone. When I open an email with a "tel:" link, it correctly suggests the phone app.
