User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030329 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030329 Somehow I've ended up on X10's junk mail list. Whenever I download new mail, all of my other messages arrive as "Unread" but every message from X10 arrives as "Read". Additionally, since this is junk mail, I always mark it as being junk but Mailnews never marks it as junk on it's own. The one wrinkle in this process is that I'm using YahooPops to download email from my Yahoo account, so it's possible that the read/unread situation is caused by some bizarre interaction there; however, that doesn't explain the inability to automatically mark the messages as junk. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Download new email via POP 2. New messages arrive, ones from X10 are marked as already read, all others are marked as unread 3.
Fixed in bug 196749?
This most likely isn't related to your Yahoo utilities as the same problem occurs for me, and I'm not running any such extras. My system is running a basic Thunderbird 0.73 installation, and is working through a common POP3 connection. However, messages still arrive every so often which are marked as "read" even though they've just arrived in the inbox. I believe that this is most likely a strategy on the part of spammers to avoid spam filters (which usually only operate on newly recieved messages to avoid the overhead of processing every single message in the folder each time the mail client completes a transaction with the server.) If a filter only operates on messages marked as new/unread, a message pre-flagged as "read" could evade the spam filter and remain in one's inbox. An efficient workaround for this would be to specifically flag all newly downloaded messages as "unread" as they come in, before the spam filter routine is called.
Jess McGraw, if you are using TB 0.8 or Moz 1.8a4, please state whether this problem has been fixed for you; if so, please dupe to bug 196749.
