1. make an option to disable current "global" mail notification
2a. Add these actions to message filters
* notify me by sound (default, selectable .wav file)
* notify me by pop-up window (see note below)
* notify me by tray icon (or something simmilar)
or
2b. make options available in folder properties with wording
"notify me when mail is delivered to this folder by ...."
reasons: if you are subscribed to several mailing lists, you are notified about
not important emails very often
Note about the popup window:
This should be similar what outlook (not outlook express) has - one of the few
features I liked in outlook and am missing in mozilla. When mail meets a "popup"
notification filer rules, new window appears or current notification windows is
brought to front. This popup windows contains list of all new e-mails (from and
subject) since the window was last closed. This way you can immediately decide,
if the email is important and worth interrupting current work and read it or not
(and simply close or minimize this window and read mail later). It would be
wonderful if you can directly open specific message or folder where it was saved
directly from email list in the popup window.

Ivan: Your first suggestion is already filed as bug 11040. You may add your
ideas as a comment to this bug.
The section "Note about popup window" is about a different issue. So formally
this bug is INVALID, because every bug-report should only cover one issue so it
can be belaboured effectively.
But since the first part of this report is a dupe, I'll morph this bug so it
covers only the second part.
Summary: selective mail notification for message filter or folder, optional popup window with new mail headers → Show subject and sender of individual messages in notification popup

Confirmed as well. Are there any news about that? I see the bug is not marked as
"helpwanted" btw.
I started a thread on MozillaZine about that
(http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=128269). I am willing to develop
an extension to add that functionality. From what a replyer (asquella) said
about making some code run when new mail notification arrives, I now wonder
whether it can still be made as an extension (a hack in the cpp code seems
necessary IIRC).
Note : I am aware about the design decisions taken in mail news of not having a
per account notification.

How about just developing a patch for Mozilla MailNews/Thunderbird instead of an
extension? This would benefit far more users and you could modify all the code
you need to. However I would contact Scott and ask him if this feature is really
wanted before you start.

Indeed. It's just that I am not too familiar with the inners or TB and that,
from what I saw in the mozilla extension tutorial
(http://www.mozilla.org/docs/tutorials/tinderstatus/), extensions seemed far
easier to develop...

I sent an email at the adress indicated in this bug. Hope it is still valid.

No, it's mscott@mozilla.org now.

Ok, thank you Stefan. The mail has been sent.
