Preconditions

• Set browser.search.widget.new to true in about:config
• Have the search bar added to the toolbar.
• Google set as default engine.

Steps to reproduce

1. Focus the new search box widget by clicking it with an empty input.
2. Select any search engine that provides trending suggestions (Google, Bing, Perplexity) to enter search mode.

Actual result

1. Google Trending search suggestion are displayed by default.
2. Trending suggestions are displayed for all engines while in search mode.

Expected result

• Uncertain at this point if we should see trending suggestion by default / only in search mode / no trending suggestions at all (This is still left to be decided in the current documentation).

Regression range

• Not a regression.
• Not reproducible for the legacy search bar.

Additional notes
Same mention for Utilities section of the address bar (arithmetic expressions, unit conversions, important calendar dates).

We'll disable for the MVP to reduce risk, but will want to re-enable this post-MVP.

Verified as fixed (no trending suggestions in new search bar for default or search mode engines) using latest Nightly 147.0a1 under Win 11, Ubuntu 24, macOS 15.
