2002936 - "switch to [tab group]" broken from tabs on sites with search functionality

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:145.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/145.0

Steps to reproduce:

Have a tab group. Open empty tab. type name of tab group. tab for "switch to tab group", enter. Works
Same steps, but in tab with search function i.e. youtube.com. does not work.

Actual results:

If current tab in same window with tab group: Makes search request to current tab site search AND switches focus to tab group.
If current tab in different window from tab group: Makes search request to current tab site search, does not switch focus.

Expected results:

Switch focus to tab group without any interaction with current window.

Unfortunately I could not reproduce your issue. Switch to tab group worked for all scenarios mentioned. Would you be so kind as to answer a few questions so we can investigate this further?

• Can you please elaborate on the STR? Or are there any other settings needed in order to reproduce?

I haven't done those tests, but I've found one more condition to reproduce the bug: It only happens on sites that I've added as search engines

I managed to reproduce this issue on:

• Firefox Nightly 147.0a1;
• Firefox 146.0;

Tested and reproduced on:

• Windows 10;
• macOS 15;

On Ubuntu 22 the tab is focused but the search is also executed. Windows and macOS both execute the search as well using the tab group name\keyword, but the switch isn't applied.

Setting as NEW.

Thank you for the report. It sounds like the "switch to tab group" quick action is having some kind of conflict with the search engine search mode. I'm not sure if there's something we need to do on the tab group side https://searchfox.org/firefox-main/source/browser/components/urlbar/ActionsProviderTabGroups.sys.mjs or on the search engine search side. Passing this to the Search component, but we can have the tab groups team fix the issue if that's where the problem is.

Reproducible on a 2025-11-28 Firefox Nightly build on Windows 10.

Verified as fixed on Firefox Nightly 149.0a1 and Firefox 148.0b1 on Windows 10, macOS 15 and Ubuntu 22.
