My main profile was created before the new profile manager was created.

After a Firefox crash I opted to restart Firefox. A window I hadn't seen before popped up to select the profile, I select to use the same profile.

My profile was restored, but with an additional tab -- unrelated to any reality but constructed based on my profile. The URL for the tab was:
file:///home/<username>/<The name of the profile>
