User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.0; U) Opera 7.03 [en]
Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.3 final
After doing a clean install of Mozilla 1.3 final and launching the program, all
that appears is the Mozilla splash screen, and then the program ends (no errors,
warnings, etc.). Launching the program with the "-profileManager" option opens
the Profile Manager, where I created a new profile (chose a local directory to
save the profile in), then the program launches. however, after closing the
browser, and re-launching it, the profile has not been saved, so I have to pass
through the Profile Manager again, recreate my profile, and so on.
I noticed that the profiles were being saved to disk, but the Profile Manager
wasn't finding them or something, as they didn't appear in the Profile Manager
on relaunch of the browser.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Launch browser with -profileManager option
2. Create new profile
3. Close browser
Actual Results:
Profile is not saved.
Expected Results:
Saved the profile.
I had been using Mozilla 1.3 final happily since it was released, but then I
decided to uninstall it (yes, i did a full uninstall, removing the profile
directory, and even clearing out the Windows registry), and install Phoenix 0.5.
I had the same profile problems in Phoenix as I am now having with Mozilla, so I
removed Phoenix from the system, and tried to reinstall Mozilla 1.3 final.

Do you have a Netscape 7 on your machine? ( See bug 200992 )
I never had problems with phoenix AND mozilla on my win98 system, could even run
them same time. But I had problems with Netscape7 AND Mozilla, because they
share the registry.dat and plugins.dat, and the profile location.
Did you use the default location for profiles, and only specified a name,
or did you try to specify a complete path?

Reporter,
Can you try creating profile and leaving default location? I cannot reproduce
here - I have Netscape 4.x on my Windows 2000 machine so after uninstalling the
old app and profile directory- when I reinstall, I get a convert/manage profile
alert. Creating a new profile works and it is saved.
On Windows 2000 the default location for profiles is
C:\Documents and Settings\yourWinprofile\Application Data\Mozilla\
This directory contains the registry and any profiles you create using default
location.

This is the view I see in the Create Profile screen of the Profile Manager upon
launching the Profile Manager after a clean install of Mozilla 1.3 final.

When I click on the "Finish" button in the Create Profile window--leaving
everything as default--nothing happens. When I specify a directory by clicking
on "Choose Folder...", and then click on "Finish", a folder is created on my
local disk (in the directory I speicified) called "Default User" containing the
folder "w5f0t2l7.slt" containing: a couple of RDF files, a bookmarks.html file
and a folder named "chrome".
I then finish, choose the new Default User profile that has been created, and
the browser is launched. When I then go to "Tools/Switch Profile..." in the
browser, the Profile Manager is empty, i.e. the Default User profile isn't
shown. Monitoring the Default User folder on my local disk shows that new files
are being created, e.g. XUL.mfl and a few others.
I then close the browser, and relaunch (without the -profileManager option this
time), and I get the splash screen, and nothing else. When I launch the browser
with the -profileManager option, the Default User profile isn't there.
Please note that Netscape (any version) is not installed on this machine or ever
has been, and no other Mozilla-derivative (Phoenix, etc.) is currently installed
on the machine.

Did you anytime in the past make the registry.dat file read-only?
This was used in the past to control the size of that file when there was a
bug with it growing continuously.
It should be under
C:\Documents and Settings\yourWinprofile\Application Data\Mozilla.
If this file was read-only, that would be the cause of this problem.
