I suspect this is due the the Content-Disposition header that the image URL sends.
But even so, if the "command" is to open the image in a new tab, then that is what the browser should do.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi David,
I tried to reproduce this issue using Firefox 147.0 (2026-01-06) and Firefox 149.0a1 (2026-01-19) on macOS 15 and Windows 10 by following the steps in the description, but I was not able to do so. When I select “Open Image in New Tab” from the context menu, the image opens in a new tab as expected, and no download starts.
Are there any additional steps, settings, or details that I might be missing? Is this still reproducible with a clean profile?
Thank you!

I tried to find public web sites with such examples but could not.
Does Mozilla have some test server where test pages cab be set up?
