Steps to reproduce:

New stable version 147.0.1 has a huge problem with playing YouTube videos, it completely crashes computer, needs hard reset. It worked before, with Hardware acceleration enabled or Recommended Best Performances. When you watch YouTube video when some commercial pops up with Skip Ad button it hangs. After that, you cannot close Firefox or do anything, just hard reset. I hope programmers will see this post and repair this issue in next update. New 147.0.2 becomes highly needed. My config, not old one, uses AMD Motherboard and AMD GPU. My setup here is to make AVC1 and H264 codec to run for YouTube videos, since my GPU does not have ability to use Hardware Acceleration for VP9. I did not have any problem before 147.0.1 update. Chrome browser works without any issue at all. It is not wanted to disable Hardware Acceleration if GPU is able to do the job. Please do something.

Actual results:

Computer hangs, nothing can be done but hard reset. Every time I watch YouTube video, I have this issue, which started with Firefox 147.0.1

Expected results:

Playing Youtube videos like it was with version 147.0.0. Everything has started with version 147.0.1. I have dual boot system with Windows 10 Pro and Windows 11 Pro. The same issue in both OS with Firefox 14.0.1.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Audio/Video: Playback' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

If it hangs, it will be hard to diagnose, so let's look at a few things:

  • Please attach your about:support to the bug.
  • Do you see any recent crash reports if you browse to about:crashes? If so, please submit them and share the links so I can go through them.
  • Do you have this problem on other websites? E.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • On nightly, we flip media.ffvpx-hw.enabled to true by default on Windows, which would impact the hardware accelerated decoding path. If you browse to about:config, flip that pref to true, and restart Firefox, does video playback now work with YouTube?

I changed media.ffvpx-hw.enabled to true, since it was false before. It looks like it works now. I am speaking about Youtube videos only, there were no problems on other sites. I have been using Firefox for decades and never had a single problem with Youtube videos. It has started with 147.0.1 update a couple a days ago. I did use CCleeaner Professional for clearing cache and cookies, as well as DirectX shader Cache just to make it start from scratch. It happens both in Windows 10 and Windows 11, I have dual boot system. As I said, it looks like it works for now, I will be reporting if issue appears again. What issue did you observe while capturing the media profile in the comment 5? From the profile, I didn't see any wrong on the media playback side. There was no stuttering and the hardware decoding was in use as well.

It freezes completely, cursor can move, but I need to do hard restart. I tried same thing with Chrome, it works without problem. I also tried to play some videos with video player, files like mp4, mkv and similar. It works. No problems occurred. The only thing is playing YouTube videos with Firefox which start blinking black and green, than it stops and nothing can be done without hard reset. I have HWInfo gadget which monitors my system and I can see if hardware acceleration is in force, it uses more GPU frequency, more voltage, VRAM, which was normal before 147.0.1 update. Why it happen occasionally I really do not know. For your information, I am speaking about AMD motherboard with AMD GPU, since some other people on eleveforum said they do not have a problem in Intel and NVIDIA environment.

I found what is the issue. Two things actually. You probably know that YouTube prefers or puts priority to av01 codec, which is not included in hardware acceleration in older GPUs, only newest one have that possibility and it is demanding for certain CPUs without hardware acceleration. If I disable it in about:config, using media.av1.enabled, FALSE, I successfully managed to have working and not freezing Firefox. Another thing relates to vp9 codec, which is the first one after av01 codec, it works, but it is not supported by my GPU and it pushes CPU but not as av01 codec. Then, I change this media.webm.enabled to FALSE and I have YouTube to stream videos in H264 codec or as it shows it in Stats For Nerds, it is avc1 codec. In that scenario, I have working Firefox and using hardware acceleration.

Second one relates to scenario that certain web pages use adds with playing videos, which I handle with this settings, but there is an issue if same web page runs two different adds with playing videos with different codecs at the same time, which confuses Firefox and I have another freeze in that scenario.

I know that easiest way is to disable Hardware Acceleration in settings, but if I use video, does not matter where, YouTube or web pages with playing videos, they all will play it using av01 high demanding codec and I will have noisy and warm system, which is not wanted situation.

Maybe, if you could to make some codec priorities in hardware acceleration, depending on GPU model or by user selecting option.

For you information, I found one more, which relates that Microsoft Edge in some configuration starts with Windows or it handles widgets using Hardware Acceleration and it is crucially important for users to open it and disable Hardware Acceleration for Microsoft Edge since it uses, guess what, av01 codec as default and it would mix with Firefox and final outcome would be another freezing of computer.

I managed here to have working Firefox in 90% situations, but sometimes in some webpages, av01 codec has priority and then it creates lot of hangs and freezes of Firefox itself.
