Details

(Whiteboard: [fxdroid][group2])

[Affected versions]:

  • Firefox Nightly 149.0
  • Firefox Beta 148.0

[Affected Platforms]:

  • Android 15 - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
  • Android 13 - Google Pixel 4

[Prerequisites]:

  • Have Firefox Beta 148 freshly installed on an Android device from this link.
  • Have the nimbus-cli setup on your laptop.

[Steps to reproduce]:

  1. Open Firefox Beta 148 with the following command to enroll in the experiment:
.\nimbus-cli.exe --app fenix --channel beta enroll preview/android-brand-refresh-onboarding --branch control --no-validate
  2. Navigate through the Onboarding until completing the flow.
  3. Observe the behavior.

[Expected result]:

  • The Marketing screen is shown at the end of the Onboarding.
  • The Onboarding flow is completed, and the Homepage is displayed.

[Actual result]:

  • The Marketing screen is not shown at all.
  • After clicking the Address Bar CTA button, Firefox is sent to the background.

[Notes]:

  • The Onboarding is displayed again from the start when focusing the browser and bringing it to the foreground.
  • After trying to complete the Onboarding again, a pop-up is displayed stating that Firefox has a bug and recommends clearing the cache. Clearing cache for the browser doesn’t fix the issue described in this report, so the user remains stuck in the Onboarding flow.
  • The issue is not reproducible when normally installing Firefox from the Play Store, without using the link from the prerequisites (which triggers the Marketing screen).
  • This issue is not reproducible on the treatment branch of the experiment.
  • A screen recording of the issue is attached here.

I have verified this issue on Firefox Beta 148.0b14 on Android 15 - Galaxy S23 Ultra and Android 13 - Pixel 4. After the experiment configuration change, I can confirm that:

  • The Marketing card is displayed correctly as the last card of the Onboarding process.
  • The Onboarding flow can be correctly completed, and the Homepage is displayed as expected.
