Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Firefox (hardware acceleration enabled, default settings).
  2. Leave Firefox idle (no WebGL-heavy pages open).
  3. Launch Foundry Virtual Tabletop standalone application.
  4. Keep the Foundry window active (not minimized).
  5. Open Windows Task Manager -> Details tab and observe memory usage (Working Set) of Firefox processes and total system RAM usage.
    Important: If Foundry is started before Firefox, the issue does not reproduce. Launch order affects reproducibility.

Actual results:

One Firefox process (likely the GPU process) rapidly increases its Working Set (physical memory usage) when Foundry Virtual Tabletop is active.
As this process grows, total system RAM usage rises up to ~30GB out of 32GB installed. The Firefox process itself does not necessarily reach 30GB alone, but its growth appears to drive overall system memory consumption.
If the Foundry window is minimized, total memory usage immediately drops (e.g., from ~30GB to ~8GB).
If the affected Firefox process is manually terminated via Task Manager, memory usage stabilizes and both applications continue functioning normally.
If Firefox is fully closed, the issue disappears entirely.
The issue only occurs when Firefox is launched before Foundry.

Expected results:

Firefox GPU process memory usage should remain stable and should not grow significantly due to another application's WebGL activity.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Graphics' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

This will need some investigation.

Can you record a profile using the Graphics preset in Firefox's profiler? https://profiler.firefox.com/ can enable the button, choose Graphics preset from the dropdown in the browser toolbar, start the profile, wait a little bit (or perform whatever operations are needed to repro this) and then click the stop button and it should open a profiler page that you can upload from - be aware that you may wish to do this from a browser with as little going as possible, to avoid capturing any other tabs you have open which may make it harder to interpret the profile.

Another thing is about:memory which lets you capture a snapshot of the memory usage, we don't have attribution of vram usage there so it probably won't show up there, but it's hard to say until we understand this issue better.

Also about:support has a copy to clipboard button at the top, if you paste that into an attachment on this bug it would be helpful to know which GPU and other details that affect the GPUProcess.

I have recorded the profile using the Graphics preset. As I mentioned, the GPU process memory grows to 30GB within about 2 minutes after launching Foundry VTT.

I've also attached a screenshot showing the memory usage reaching 24GB in Task Manager.

I’ve been doing some more testing, and there seems to be a possible pattern. The issue might be related to the use of animated .webp wallpapers (themes) in Firefox.

In my recent attempts, when I switched to a static theme, the GPU process memory usage appeared to stay stable, even with Foundry VTT running. I can't be 100% certain yet that this is the only cause, but there's a visible correlation in my tests so far.
