User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:147.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/147.0

Steps to reproduce:

This is highly similar to the bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2014616
However that was fixed in v147.0.4 but my issue was not.
And a bit of history can be found: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1564205

And to reiterate,
Since upgrade to v147.0.3, my about:newtab is completely empty. Screenshot in the support forum thread. Troubleshoot mode did not help. A few attempts were tried in the forum thread, but nothing helped.

Hi Carlton,

Can you please visit about:support in the affected browser, click "Copy text to clipboard", and the paste the contents into a new comment or attachment in this bug?

Hi Mike,

I forgot to mention this, but that page is empty too. I've attached the export and the screenshot to the page.

Interesting - so about:support is broken too. I'm starting to suspect there's more going on here at a deeper level than just a broken newtab page.

Does normal browsing to websites work?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::New Tab Page' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → New Tab Page

Normal browsing works fine. I haven't met a case where it is obviously because of Firefox is broken.
Besides about:newtab and about:support, I know below good / bad cases:

  • about:config works fine
  • about:preferences works
  • The "manage profiles" page is broken too (I don't know the url to it though), but about:profiles works fine

I think it worth mentioning that I am using a profile folder outside of the default Firefox folder, and actually on a different drive.

And a bit of history of issues observed from my side, however my memory of the events before v147.0.3 probably is misaligned.

  • In the first version that "Profiles" menu is provided, I have issue with "manage profiles" page, that it will show my current profile but I cannot do anything with it, like copy profile or edit, button click does nothing. I can create a new profile, but it will disable my original profile.
  • I've restored my profile backup and decided to leave it along, since I don't need the profiles feature.
  • And after v147.0.3, I've noticed that the about:newtab is empty, along with that "manage profiles" view. That's when I've decided to seek help in forum because the new tab issue affects my usage.

Any update on this?

Update: This issue still persists after upgraded to 148.0.

Hi Carlton,

If you (temporarily) move your profile folder to your main drive, does the problem still persist with both newtab and about:support?

Hi Mike,
I worry if I move my profile it would cause damage - but if I just create a new profile under about:profiles with a default path it would work fine; if I create a new profile with a customized path it works fine too.

Hi Carlton,

Okay, let's try something slightly different - instead of moving your profile folder, can you temporarily copy it to your main drive to see if the problem persists when you launch it from there?

This is what I did:

  • I've copied the current profile folder from outside of C: drive to the default path (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Root)
  • In about:profiles, I've created a new profile which targets this path. After creation, it seems Firefox automatically assigned a local folder to it at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Root, which is not showing up for the original profile.
  • Upon clicking "Launch profile in new browser", a new Firefox with the profile successfully started, with all saved states are still available, but seems like all cookies are invalidated.
  • However, both new tab and the support page still does not work.

This sounds suspiciously similar to bug 2007810, which we have a lead on fixing. When that one gets closed out, we should see if this has also fixed Carlton S's situation.

I hereby confirm that the problem still exists in Firefox 149.0 on all computers that my family uses.

Some more information:
Setting a website link as startpage or new tab seems to work as long as it's a link with www. like www.yahoo.com

But if a link without www. is used like for example: https://nl.search.yahoo.com/?fr2=p:fprd,mkt:nl-be
it says blank. This used to work before in older versions of Firefox. My mother noticed on her computer/firefox that it failed recently and on my firefox same behavior.

Hope it can be fixed.

Kind regards,
Hans

The original reporter's problem was that the built-in about:newtab (the "new tab page") and other built-in pages like about:support were coming up blank. That is what was fixed in Firefox 149 in bug 2007810. Your problem seems to be with a custom homepage URL which is unrelated to the original issue in this bug.

The example link you gave above works fine for me in 149, at least for the "Homepage and new windows" setting. The "New Tabs" setting can only be "Firefox Home" (the built-in about:home page, not your homepage) or blank, and it has been like that for years now. Please ask for additional help at https://support.mozilla.org or file a new bug on your issue.

Unfortunately, this bug started to appear for me in v152.0. I'm using Debian and Gentoo (on 2 PC) and it appeared on both after the update.
New page is blank, about:support is mostly blank (as the published screenshot before), and the new homepage settings is only halfway filled (there's only the "default browser" and "Startup" sections).
If I create a new profile, everything works as intended, but my 2 profiles have been broken because of this.

I can confirm as well that it's not working for me with v152.0 using Gentoo as well. The profile change trick seems to work but I will try downgrading to v151.0.4 for now.
