User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/200300430
When being asked to choose whether Mozilla is your default browser, start page
doesn't load and Mozilla freezes and you are unable to select any option on the
pop-up.
The only choice is to kill the app.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.(version 1.3 is ok) Un-install every component of previous version (registry,
common files/GRE, Application Data/Mozilla, mozilla.org)
2. deploy any recent build 1.4b (with or without installer)
3. launch Mozilla
4. you get the prompt 'set as default browser'
Actual Results:
5. you used to have the browser window in the background load the
mozilla.org/start page, there it stays blank, while status bar says 'resolving
mozilla.org.... Done'
6. you can't answer the prompt
7. CPU is 100%, allocated memory increases, application doesn't respond anymore
You can't do anything with Mozilla (except -mail which is ok)

isn't a duplicate of http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=140995
(was only in case of 'yes' being selected)
is a regression

Update:
I was able to have Mozilla build 2003050211
(http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/mozilla-win32-talkback.zip)
start correctly but with a different installation process:
- remove everything (registry, profile, program files, GRE)
- install 1.3 first (mozilla-win32-installer-sea.exe) without quicklaunch,
create a new profile in a non default folder, select this new profile
- start 1.3 (anwser NO to "set it as the default browser")
- exit 1.3
- extract mozilla-win32-talkback.zip in a different folder
- launch build 2003050211 : it doesn't ask to set it as the default browser and
loads the start page, previously created profile is being used
Note: I have 5 profiles on Netscape 4.79, none of them is migrated, I only use
the new one
Other comment:
Setup on windows 98 without any previous Mozilla version is running fine !
This sounds very similar to bug 140995, but in a different area of the code,
obviously.
It's probably one of those bugs that only happen on certain systems (depending
on what's running), just like in bug 140995.

A couple of comments:
1. For the reporter's step 3, if you launch mailnews instead of the browser,
the following message pops up "The file /content/messenger.xul cannot be
found. Please check the location and try again."
2. After removing the profiles and registry settings, launch Internet Explorer
(regardless of whether or not IE is set to check to the default browser).
Close it, and then launch the Mozilla browser. The dialog box prompting you to
set Mozilla as your default browser appears. On my system, however, clicking
any button will cause Mozilla to throw up another dialog box saying, "There is
no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A:". Not having a disk
handy, I can't see what will happen if I do. If I hit the Cancel button, the
dialog box pops back up a second later.
My system: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Mozilla Talkback-enabled build, build
ID 2003050811

Hi
Here are some updates with build 20030519 win2000 talkback enabled (zip)
- original description still reproduced
- I don't get
'1. For the reporter's step 3, if you launch mailnews instead of the browser,
the following message pops up "The file /content/messenger.xul cannot be
found. Please check the location and try again."'
as described in #4
but mozilla -mail launches with success
Actually, from there, I cancel the mail account wizard and I'm able to start
Navigator, but I reach the same result
- see screenshot enclosed
- then Mozilla crashed, while doing the screenshot ? (using snagit), dump from
NQA is attached

What Netscape Quality Agent collected when mozilla crashed after switching from
Mail&News to Browser/Navigator

Additions:
- After restart of win2000, the mozilla start page loads in the background of
the pop (previously the browser window stay greyed, as shown on the screenshot)
- After 30 seconds, Mozilla crashes spontaneously and generates the report

Hi
Testing installer build 2003060108 win 2000
In fact, comment 9 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205769#c9 about
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.added_static_root", true);
(also known as http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201381#c4)
solves the hang at startup for a new Profile.
However, I couldn't see any local folder link in my IE favorites, but I have
folders to organize them.
If the patch on http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201381 is in this
build 2003060108 , it doesn't seem to work (the manual workaround is still
needed)

This bug seems to be fixed for me (using 1.4rc1). Specifically, I no longer
have any of the problems I mentioned in comment #4.

Just looking back to changes in 1.4 compared to 1.3, I notice that we get new
features on bookmark management.
Release 1.3 works fine for me.
Would the trouble be rooted somewhere in the implementation of these new
bookmark features?

Additional tests:
- deleting the content of the MSIE Favorites folder
- launching install after a full clean-up
- creating a new profile
- it works !
- un-installing
- restoring the Favorites folder content
- creating a new profile
- it doesn't work (build 2003060208 installer-sea.exe)
