currently the longfox secret setting is only available on nightly and debug.
putting it in beta and release builds too will allow users more control.

it would be good to include this setting in the homepage settings too, for ease of discoverability, as shown here

This means that if people are in the longfox experiment and hate it, they can turn it off.
conversely, if you are longfox curious you could switch it on!

firefox-beta Uplift Approval Request

  • User impact if declined/Reason for urgency: in v153 we are adding a new button on the homepage which either:
    a) launches the privacy dashboard
    b) (for a small minority of users assigned by experiment) launches the longfox minigame.

The button label will change depending on if you are in group a or group b.
The button can be shown or hidden from the homepage settings screen.
Without this change, for group b), going into the homepage settings will show a misleading switch label which does not relate to the button being seen.
Basically we want to avoid the situation where a user accidentally launches the game, wants to turn it off but can’t figure out how.
This should make this pathway much easier for people who look in homepage settings.

Additionally, if the button is shown by the above switch, this pr allows you to change its behaviour in secret settings.
Previously this button existed was limited to nightly or debug builds.
This also makes it easier for qa to test the different features in the beta build.

  • Code covered by automated testing?: no
  • Fix verified in Nightly?: no
  • Needs manual QE testing?: yes
  • Steps to reproduce for manual QE testing: - go to settings -> homepage
    • observe switch text “Privacy report”
  • enable Longfox in secret settings.
  • go to settings -> homepage
    • observe switch text “Help catch trackers”
  • Risk associated with taking this patch: low
  • Explanation of risk level: it's just a text change and an increase in visibility of a secret setting switch which has been in nightly for a while.
  • String changes made/needed?: no, just reusing existing strings
  • Is Android affected?: yes
