The new launch .exe option should be offered in the initial download dialogue
instead of having the user save it to a location and only be allowed to launcch
it after the download has completed. This really does not save the user a step,
since one still has to go and delete the file anyway (if it is a one time
installer or something similar). Perhaps there should be a temporary directory
where such files are kept and then automatically deleted later if the user
selects launch instead of save.

I agree entirely, why even bother if the user still has to save, then launch?

I think mozilla should just download the executable to the default temp dir of
the system and then execute it.

Heh, I thought that was a bug, because I remebered wrong about the launch warning...
It shouldn't be just exe, IE has that option for all file types......

I believe we WONTFIX'd bugs requesting this before, but I can't find them...

Indeed, we wontfixed bugs like this on the basis of this being a security hole
big enough to drive trains through.
I'm not even going to waste my time looking for the dup.

I still haven't found a
reasonable explanation as to why this feature isn't included. It's not a
security issue as there is no difference from me clicking open in the browser
dialog or by saving it and then clicking open.
