(Blocks 1 open bug)

Details

(Keywords: hang, snap)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:152.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/152.0

Steps to reproduce:

Just launching Firefox version 152.0.2 (snap from latest/candidate) on Kubuntu 24.04

Actual results:

Hangs/freeze immediately on launch. Most of tabs (except for about 3 first pinned) are visible, but the interface not responded.
Working version: 152.0.1 (snap from latest/stable)

Blocks: snap
Keywords: hang, snap
Flags: needinfo?(thinker.li)
Flags: needinfo?(nathan.teodosio)

I cannot reproduce the bug.

Please share

snap changes

as it could be caused by some other underlying snap changing.

Also give some more information about your system, in about:support there is a bunch, particularly interested in display protocol and GPU.

If on Wayland, you could try MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0 DISABLE_WAYLAND=1 /snap/bin/firefox to see if it has anything to do with the problem.

Flags: needinfo?(nathan.teodosio) → needinfo?(boaz.dodin)

And use the command line to start it as useful information could appear in the standard error.

It's hard to think this is caused by the point release, can you please go back to the supposedly working release

snap refresh --revision=8521 firefox

and confirm it still works?

Did you get anything on stdout/stderr when executing it from the command-line? Or anything releavant in journalctl -r?

I am currently on 152.0.1 (snap from latest/stable), moved to stable channel via Discover.
Everything works.

/snap/bin/firefox, share the output.

journalctl -r, share the output (only time between Firefox launch and termination needed).

Try firefox -p and see if you can reproduce in a brand new profile.

Only commits between 152.0.1 and 152.0.2 that I vaguely think could play a role are

Do you need this info on the current, working Firefox 152.0.1?

Preferrably on the broken one, thank you (:

Just reproduced it again on 152.0.2 (snap from latest/candidate)!

  1. The lines are missing their end, if you are using copy and paste, please invoke it with journalctl -r | less so that the lines wrap around instead of cropping.

  2. Does /snap/bin/firefox --private work?

/snap/bin/firefox --private does not work.
The same frozen Firefox is launching, with all my pinned tabs, with an addition of 1 new tab - about:privatebrowsing

  1. Can you try with a new profile?

     /snap/bin/firefox -p

Then click "Create profile", name it test or something, launch it, see if that works. You can leter delete that profile.

  2. This is the only conspicuous thing in your log:

Jun 24 10:51:19 boaz-desktop kwin_x11[2450]: kwin_core: XCB error: 152 (BadDamage), sequence: 64704, resource id: 14995887, ma
jor code: 143 (DAMAGE), minor code: 3 (Subtract)
Jun 24 10:51:19 boaz-desktop kwin_x11[79810]: kf.notifications: Playing audio notification failed: Destroyed

but it's about KDE's window manager, kwin_x11. Do you get that too when the working version of Firefox is started?

I'm insalling Kubuntu 24.04 to try to reproduce.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2049845 looks exactly like this bug, so may be it's not Snap related and/or limited too?

Might well be. You could run

free -h

once before, once after starting Firefox and once after killing it to verify that.

Summary: Hangs/freeze immediately on launch → Firefox 152.0.2 on Linux hangs/freeze immediately on launch (regression from 152.0.1)

We're actively investigating this in bug 2049845. In the mean time, I've reverted the Snap Store back to 152.0.1.
