I understand that this feature is not functional yet, as 2067278 and 2067279 are incomplete.
However, please be aware that at its current implementation (v157.0 beta), selecting "Darkest" theme ALSO makes the "Follow device theme" show as selected, and THAT is the theme that seems to take precedence.
(As you can see in this screenshot, after selecting the "Darkest" theme option and restarting the Firefox app, both "Darkest" and "Follow device theme" radio buttons are selected, and the actual Firefox UI is in light mode, because the Android device is in light mode.)
Please make sure that, after the OLED colors are implemented in Compose and XML UIs, the Darkest theme is not restricted to "only while the Android system is in dark mode." Users should be able to set Firefox to Darkest theme regardless of the device's theme state.
....I apologize, I should have been more diligent before posting my comment. This bug did exist in earlier versions, but after checking that I was fully updated, I discovered the bug is not present in version 157.0b3.
Please disregard my previous comment.
