User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030507 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030507 I have a message marked un-read. I click on the message and read it in the preview pane. Now the message is marked as read. I then click on the mark as un-read on the message in the column, and then open message. Now the message is marked as read again. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Expected Results: I wanted to keep the message as un-read, but still have the message open at the same time.
Please mark it unread *after* you read it - we have to mark messages read when you read them, pretty much by definition.

But I dont have a chance to mark it was read when I want, since Mail/News does it for me. Take this for example, I put my focus on a mail message, it is then marked as read. But I then mark it was un-read, and then open the message, then I hit print, then I close the message. The moment I opened the message, it auto-marked itself as read. This is not good default behavoir.

this is the correct default behaviour. If you want some behaviour that's not tied to reading a message, use the mark as flagged command. You're basically saying that reading a message shouldn't mark it as read. It's a tautology that reading a message should mark it as read. If we didn't mark messages as read when users read them, we'd have thousands of complaints. This is the first complaint I've heard that reading a message marks it as read. I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding something you're saying.

This is not the default behavior in Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Pine, Netscape 4.X, and Lotus Notes. So why does Mozilla need to do it differently.
yes, it is the default behaviour in Netscape 4.x,and Outlook Express. I'm pretty sure it's also the default for Pine, Eudora, etc. I think you must not be understanding me - I'm saying if you have the imap delete model, where deleted messages are shown, the mail client will not issue an expunge on it's own, and remove deleted messages.
I think I know what the reporter is meaning here. In OE there is a delay after opening/selecting the message before it gets marked as Read. This is a user set value (default is 5 seconds IIRC) on the Read tab of the Options dialogue. What this means is that you can open a message, click Print, and move to another message before it gets marked Read. For the short time I was forced to use OE at work I found this so bloody irritating (I could read short messages in <5 seconds) that I set the value to 0. In fact, if you UNcheck the option it never gets marked as Read if you only view it in the preview pane; you have to open it in it's own message window for it to be automatically marked Read. I don't recall any similar setting in NS4.x; maybe it was just slow? Personally I can't see that it serves any useful purpose.
Yes, this is exactly what I mean. I as well as many others that I have talked to miss this option in Mail/News. My preference whould be to put the option in, and default it to 0, then a user like myself can change it if wanted.

ok, thx a lot for the info. I hate to say it, but this feature is way down the list of features that I think would be worth implementing. But others are welcome to give it a shot :-)
