Prerequisites

  • User is signed into Firefox Nightly with an account having active VPN access.
  • VPN has been previously set up, authorized and is on.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Firefox Nightly and observe the "On" VPN state from one of the menus (HNT, Trust Panel, Existing tab).
  2. Swipe kill (force close) the Firefox Nightly app from the Android recent apps switcher.
  3. Relaunch Firefox Nightly and quickly open one the menus.
  4. Observe the "VPN" section.
  5. Repeat the steps.

Expected behavior

VPN state is "Off" and does not prompt for account re-authorization.

Actual behavior

VPN state intermittently resets, showing the "Try it free" state and requiring the user to complete the re-authorization flow to use the VPN.

Device information

  • Firefox version: Fx Nightly 157.0a1 (Build #2016182535)
  • Android device model: Google Pixel 7a
  • Android OS version: Android 16

Any additional information?

  • The "Try it free" state can briefly appear in the menu before transitioning to the expected "Off" state (need to open one of the menus quick enough after restarting the app).
  • See attached media.
  • Locations are not needed to be enabled to reproduce this issue.

Issue is still intermittently reproducible in Fx Nightly 159.0a1 (Build #2016188847) with a Google Pixel 7a (Android 16).

Since nightly and release are affected, beta will likely be affected too.

The patch landed in nightly and beta is affected.

:royang, please make an uplift decision for beta:

  • For beta, nominate the patch for beta uplift approval if the fix should be included in this release, or set status-firefox159 to wontfix if the fix can wait for the next release.

See Requesting an Uplift for documentation on how to request an uplift.

Ticket verified in Fx Nightly 160.0a1 (Build #2016191826) with a Google Pixel 7A device with Android 16. User is no longer signed out from the Built-in VPN, if the app is closed and reopened.
