Steps to reproduce
- Right-click on a tab
- Select “Share”
- Select ”Generate QR Code…”
Actual results
The attached QR code was generated.
Expected results
The QR code should not include branding for Firefox. The QR code should be a plain QR code without rounded corners or logos.
QR codes are infrastructure. They shouldn’t be abused to advertise Firefox. The purpose that QR codes are used for is entirely unrelated to Firefox: The user who scans the QR code does not need to use Firefox, nor do they need to care that the user who provided the QR code is using Firefox.
It is unacceptable to hijack the user’s communication with advertising like this.
Just as Firefox should not inject Firefox advertising into downloaded files, HTTP requests, WebRTC audio streams, screenshots, shared links or websites themselves, so too it should not inject advertising into generated QR codes.
Firefox should stand for an open internet, and a large part of that is interoperability. Instead of facilitating open communication, adding branding and styling to the QR code makes the QR code less reliable. It sacrifices error correction bits and compatibility with less sophisticated reading devices and applications in order to look pretty and inject an advertisement.
