User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Images and pages slow to finish loading on many links off of cnn.com. If you click on some links the pages never seem to finish loading - it's the images that appear to hold things up. This most always occurrs if the the site is referencing http://www.cnnaudience.com/ to (maybe) get the images. If the http://www.cnnaudience.com/ is shown on the status bar, the images take a really long time to load. Going back to cnn.com main page will often cause it to load a long time from one of the http://www.cnnaudience.com/ -referenced pages. I check this with IE6 and all the pages load fine, so I don't think it's my router/firewall (netgear FR114P). I've also cleared cache with RC3 and have it installed in a new directory. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to www.cnn.com 2. Click on a few story links. 3. If images are loaded from http://www.cnnaudience.com/, they take a long time. Actual Results: Images and pages will continue to load for a very long time (at least 3mins, often longer). Expected Results: Most non http://www.cnnaudience.com/ referenced pages load in a snap. These should too. It's mostly annoying that the browser feels really slow to load these pages. Annoying enought that I just avoid cnn.com as my workaround. Every other site I've been on seems just fine.
Can you give an example? I looked at 6 or so links just now, they didn't seem to have any images from that server.
I should have had some link examples, but I thought the site would change too quickly. http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/south/06/29/bangladesh.floods.ap/index.html Here are some examples of similar behavior for another server today: http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/06/28/offbeat.hot.dog/index.html http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/06/29/mars.rover/index.html
I'm seeing similar problem with other cnn.com pages, in my case with Mozilla 1.4 on Red Hat 7.3. One example is: http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/09/06/mideast/index.html The page will start loading and then stall. I get the toolbars on the top and left, the photo on the right, and the headline. There's a missing image at the top, and the text of the story is missing. Looking at the page source, it appears that the text of the story has been downloaded but Mozilla hasn't got round to rendering it. I think it's stuck on the top image which is: http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.0/story/header.world.gif If I load this image URL in Mozilla directly it spins forever. If I load this URL in Konquerer, it loads fine.
It seems my slow CNN pages have gotten better since I upgraded my Netgear FR11P router's firmware from V1.3 Release 16 (which is ICSA certified - router shipped with V1.3R5) to the newer V1.4R26. I suspected the router may be filtering or dropping some packets, but couldn't figure this out since IE6 worked fine on the same links with the the V1.3 firmware and I had slow load problems with Mozilla. I never noticed this before Moz1.3.
Is anyone still seeing this problem with cnn.com loading images slowly in more recent Mozilla builds? I just tried all the included URLs in the 20031029 nightly Firebird build and they loaded up almost instantly.
I'm not seeing it any longer, and I'm using the same Mozilla 1.4 on the same Red Hat 7.3 system as with my prior comment. I'd have to assume at this point that it was something at CNN's end, though it's hard to imagine what given that it was apparently a problem for Mozilla and not other browsers.
Resolving worksforme based on comments, but please reopen if this comes back in recent builds.
