wfm with Mozilla1.4 and a current trunk
Have you installed 1.4 in an complete empty directory ?
Have you also tried a new profile ?

Smells like a bug related to an overwriting installation...

creating a new profile helped (even with the overwriting installation).

You could delete/rename this files in your old profile while Mozilla isn't
running and hope that it works after that.
oldprofile\localstore.rdf
oldprofile\xul.mfl
all files in oldprofile\chrome\*.*

unfortunately this (deleting the files) doesn't work (or mayme fortunately, for
yet it isn't possible to say that it is not several problem when deleting three
files helps).
