We have too many version iterations (and products.  While it's a nice problem to
have, it does make version management cumbersome.  Instead, it would be nice if
the version field could be free form.  Another option would be to hide the
version field (for a selected group of products), and create a custom field (as
in Bug 91037).

Albert;  although bug 77193 isn't an exact duplicate of this bug based on the 
summaries, I think it's the right way to go about solving the problem you 
describe. Just FYI, I had to implement a free-form version field locally 
(because of PHBs who didn't listen when I said it was a bad idea), and a year 
later it was scrapped as a bad idea, making a whole lot of work to clean it up.
